The first ruler of Norway was Harald the Fairhaired in 872 AD.
Between 800 and 1000 AD, Norway's Vikings invaded and occupied
much of northern Europe. From 1381 to 1814 the country was
united with Denmark and from 1814 to 1905 with Sweden. In 1905,
Norway became independent with Prince Charles of Denmark as King.
During World War I Norway remained neutral and Germany attacked
on April 9, 1940 and occupied the country until 1945. After the
war, Norway joined NATO, but rejected membership in the Common
Market. Abundant hydroelectric power has brought
industrialization to the country and one of the highest standards
of living have been achieved. Norway's merchant marine fleet is
one of the largest and has repeated disputes with the Soviet
Union over territorial waters in the Barents Sea. Recently,
state revenue has been greatly increased by the production of
North Sea oil.
